O'malley is proposing that the 6% sales tax be applied to gasoline sales.  THis is on top of the $.235 tax that the state already collects.

The top 10 suggested cuts by Tea Party members total $6 trillion over 10 years, more than the cuts proposed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, the president's Simpson-Bowles Commission, and the totals being sought by the congressional "super committee." The Tea Party's top 10 preferred cuts: 1. Repeal Obamacare (93%) 2. Reduce duplicative purchases of Pentagon Supplies (90%) 3. Eliminate Department of Education (81%) 4. Privatize Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac (81%) 5. Reduce discretionary spending to 2008 levels (76%) 6. Block

The Political Basis for the FairTax

As the current debate over fiscal reform suggests, very few proposals for fundamental changes in tax policy have the potential to command support across the ideological spectrum. The "FairTax" is the great exception. Correctly understood, the Fair Tax Act (HR 25, S13 with 67 cosponsors), which would replace almost all federal taxes with a direct tax on consumption, should appeal to conservatives, progressives, and libertarians alike.
